An Upward Look

A Daily Devotional Observation from God's Word

September 2

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR TODAYHow doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people! how is she become as a widow! she that was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary! (Lamentations 1:1)

Somber questions were asked in the first verse of the book of Lamentations. Basically, a city that was the crowning jewel of the entire earth now sits in ruins, and asks “how did we get here?” As we continue reading, we find the answers. “The LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions,” verse 5 says. Again in verse 8, “Jerusalem hath grievously sinned; therefore she is removed.” Jerusalem had grievously rebelled against God’s commandment. (v.18, 20) She had been warned by the prophets of God again and again, yet she continued in sin. Whether it be an individual or a nation, a compassionate and longsuffering God will send judgment when His call to repentance is not heeded. Jerusalem and the entire nation of Judah had rebelled against God, giving no thought of the consequences of their actions. Judgment had now come, and it was too late to repent. Their beloved city and their nation were completely destroyed. If God is speaking to you about your unfaithfulness to Him, repent now and receive His blessings, not His judgment. It is your choice! ~~~~
