An Upward Look

A Daily Devotional Observation from God's Word

August 22

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR TODAYThe heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9)

Sometimes we say that someone has a good heart. What we mean is that they are very loving and generous. The truth is that every child has been born with a bad heart which is deceitful and desperately wicked. Psalm 51 states that we were brought forth in iniquity and conceived in sin. We look at a precious baby and see its innocence, yet before many years his heart will become deceitful. Because of his wicked heart, he will develop a sin nature that is contrary to the will of our holy God, consequently self-denial is a must for a Christian. The question is asked in verse 9, “Who can know it (the heart)”. In the next verse it is answered, “I the LORD search the heart.” God is ready and willing to cleanse your heart through your repentance and His forgiveness. Let Him have control today. ~~~
