An Upward Look
A Daily Devotional Observation from God's Word
June 10
SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR TODAYBut he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him. (2 Chronicles 10:8)
Gray hair is but one characteristic of old men. Another is wisdom - a kind of wisdom not learned in a classroom. Old men may think slower, but they think deeper. Their experiences have taught them the kind of wisdom that is worth passing on to the younger generation. As a young man I realized that by learning from those much older I could avoid the many pitfalls that others have experienced. Upon becoming King, Rehoboam asked advice concerning the taxing of Israel. The older men advised him to lighten the tax burden; however his contemporaries thought he should raise taxes. Rejecting the counsel of the older men, Rehoboam lost ten of the twelve tribes of his kingdom. The lesson learned here is that we should listen to those who are older and more experienced than us so we can someday be men (or women) of wisdom. ~~~
