An Upward Look

A Daily Devotional Observation from God's Word

May 31

SCRIPTURE VERSE FOR TODAYAnd the sons of Carmi; Achar, the troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the thing accursed. (1 Chronicles 2:7)And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, … And God granted him that which he requested. (1 Chronicles 4:10)

In the first few chapters of 1 Chronicles we read hundreds of names in the linage of Adam. Not much is said about each one; however, two comments do stand out. The first is about a man named Achan (Achar). We remember Achan when he was fighting the battle for Jericho. It was there that he stole some silver, gold and a garment, an act which had been strictly forbidden by the Lord. Because of Achan’s sin, thirty six soldiers died and the army was defeated at Ai. His legacy: He was a troubler of Israel. The second comment is about Jabez. Although born with sorrow, Jabez prayed sincerely and specifically for a blessing, and God granted him his request. His legacy: He was more honorable than his brethren. When your life is over, what will be your legacy? Will it be about trouble or a blessing? ~~~
